Mission
Provide comprehensive, evidence-based, and state-of-the-art urological care including prevention, diagnosis, medical & surgical treatment, reconstructive, transplant, and minimally invasive therapies. Train future urologists, residents, and allied health staff through hands-on education, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Engage in community outreach and awareness, promoting early detection of urological diseases, reducing suffering and improving quality of life. Ensure ethical, compassionate care with respect for patient dignity and affordability, minimizing financial burden. Continuously upgrade infrastructure, technology, and skills to keep pace with advances globally.
Brief History
Brief History of the Urology Department, GDMC • In October 2022, the Urology Department was formally constituted at GDMC as a super-speciality facility. • The department was created to reduce the burden on patients who previously had to visit private hospitals for complex urological care, especially in the Garhwal region, and to offer these services at subsidised or free rates via schemes like Ayushman Bharat. • At its start, the department began with an OPD (Out-Patient Department) running twice a week. • Alongside OPD, open surgeries for kidney ailments were introduced from the outset. • From its establishment, there was a plan/pathway to expand capabilities: to include laparoscopic urological surgeries in the near future, and to aim to perform kidney transplant operations within a year.
Current Status (as per your update + what is known) • The department now has one Professor and one Associate Professor on staff. • It runs OPD for three days a week and operates (OT) for three days a week. • It has an In-Patient Department (IPD) with 20 beds. • It is performing all types of higher-end urological surgeries (i.e., advanced surgeries beyond just basic/stone/urology procedures)
Implications & Significance • This expansion from initial twice-weekly OPD to thrice weekly, and from open surgery only to “higher-end” surgeries, shows rapid scaling of service. • The bed strength (20 beds) indicates the institution has allocated dedicated ward capacity for urology, rather than merely shared general surgical beds. • With Professorial and Associate Professorial leadership, academic and teaching potential is present important for a medical college.
