Vision

To be a centre of excellence in anatomical education, research and training — providing medical students with a deep, integrated understanding of the structure, development and clinical correlates of the human body, thereby equipping them to become competent, compassionate and lifelong-learning medical professionals.

Mission

To deliver high-quality teaching of human anatomy (gross anatomy, histology, embryology, neuroanatomy, surface anatomy, radiological anatomy) aligned with the latest curriculum of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the integrated medical curriculum. To promote early clinical correlation and applied anatomical knowledge, enabling students to link structure with function and pathology. To develop and maintain modern infrastructure (anatomy museum, dissection hall, microscopy, imaging correlates, digital teaching aids) and ensure exposure to hands-on and self-directed learning. To foster research, innovation and scholarship in anatomy and related fields, encouraging faculty and students to publish, present, and collaborate. To nurture ethical behaviour, respect for cadaveric donors and allied medical professionals, the culture of enquiry, teamwork and lifelong professional growth.

Brief History

The Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Dehradun, was established in 2016 by the Government of Uttarakhand to address the growing need for medical education and healthcare services in the Garhwal region and Uttarakhand at large. The anatomy department was one of the foundational departments planned in the college’s initial infrastructure. According to DPR documentation, the construction of academic blocks including the Department of Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry and Community Medicine was among the first phases. Over the years, the Department of Anatomy at GDMC has grown its faculty, laboratories and teaching resources. For example, current faculty listings show Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors in Anatomy. GDMC UK Through its journey, the department has aligned itself with modern teaching-learning practices, integrated teaching modules, and continues to serve the institution’s mission of producing skilled doctors for the state of Uttarakhand and beyond.

Infrastructure

Dissection hall & gross anatomy laboratory – A dedicated hall for cadaveric dissection, practical demonstration of anatomical structures and hands-on learning.

Museum of anatomy specimens and models – Display of preserved specimens, anatomical models and charts for teaching and self-study.

Microscopy/histology laboratory – Equipped with microscopes, slides of tissues/organs (histology & embryology) for student practicals.

Demonstration rooms / tutorial rooms – Rooms for small-group interaction, clinical-anatomical correlation sessions, and seminars.

Audio-visual & digital teaching aids – Multimedia facilities (projector, smart boards, digital anatomy software, ) to support modern teaching.

Library / departmental reading area – Access to anatomy textbooks, atlases, journals, e-resources and a quiet space for student reading and revision.

Specimen preparation & storage area – Infrastructure for embalming, specimen preservation and storage (museum store room, cold storage if applicable).

Faculty- & staff-rooms – Rooms for the Head of Department, faculty offices, staff room, administration & supporting staff offices.
