About GDMC
Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Dehradun, is a premier medical institution established by the Government of Uttarakhand to meet the healthcare and medical education needs of the state. Recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated with Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Uttarakhand Medical Education University, the college has rapidly grown into a centre of excellence in teaching, training, research, and patient care.
A Legacy of Service and Learning
The associated teaching hospital, Doon Hospital, was founded in 1935 as a district hospital and has since evolved into a state-of-the-art, ISO-certified, super-speciality tertiary care facility. Today, it is a 750+ bedded hospital offering advanced medical services with modern facilities such as MRI, CT scan, Colour Doppler, Cath Lab, ICUs, Trauma and Emergency Care, and modular operation theatres.
The hospital is staffed with highly qualified and experienced doctors, nurses, and healthcare personnel, providing students with unparalleled exposure and hands-on learning in real-world healthcare environments.
Strategic Role in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand, carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 9 November 2000, presents unique challenges due to its mountainous terrain, scattered rural population, and difficult accessibility. Nearly 80% of the population resides in remote hamlets, making healthcare delivery particularly challenging.
GDMC was established with a vision to bridge this gap by providing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services. Strategically located in Dehradun -the gateway to the Garhwal region- the college and hospital serve patients from all seven districts of Garhwal, particularly benefitting the underserved and tribal populations of Uttarkashi, Tehri, and Dehradun.
Infrastructure and Growth
The medical college operates across two sites in Dehrakhas, Patel Nagar, and Central Dehradun. The campus is rapidly developing with modern academic blocks, central library, research facilities, and residential infrastructure for faculty and students.
